Ethnic Chinese Folk Culture and Taoist Thoughts

Singapore has gone through tremendous change since its independence in 1965. As a country that is situated at the crossroad of the East and West, the globalization in recent years has inevitably created much impact on the traditional culture and heritage in the Chinese community.

In order to assess this impact and raise the public awareness of such traditions, four non-profit organizations, have jointly initiated a two-day international conference, entitled Ethnic Chinese Folk Culture and Taoist Thoughts. By virtue of its 5,000 long standing years of history, its bearing and influence on Chinese philosophy and thinking, traditional customs and practices that are still prevailing today, the conference has adopted Taoist culture as the central theme of discussion and analysis.

Speakers & Scope

The organizing committee, after much thought and deliberation, has managed to identify 14 eminent scholars and researchers from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore as speakers. In addition, to facilitate and encourage the participation of young and non-Mandarin speaking audiences, three of the presentations will be delivered in English.

Unique to this conference is that the presenters will focus their discussions and findings on how Taoist culture, in theory and practice, has changed and influenced the mental outlook of contemporary Chinese including the ethnic Chinese in Singapore. There is much relevance in contributing towards a better understanding of everyday life and behaviours of many Singaporeans.
